The Cipriani Residence is centrally located to Tiffany, Hermes, Pink and BMW. In addition, within two blocks you can walk to one the of the greatest steak houses in New York, Harry’s on Hanover. The Cipriani Residence dates back to 1842 with astonishing history. Prior to becoming a residence building 55 Wall Street was the home to the Merchants Exchange and the Untied States Custom Service and The National City Bank (today’s Citibank). This building was as designed by a Boston architect, Isaiah Rogers who masterfully designed the building in the Greek revival style that was the height of fashion at the time it was constructed in 1842. The building was made of granite which was sent over by ships from Quincy Massachusetts. The huge columns that tower of Wall Street were each carved from “single” massive block stones instead of smaller stones pieced together. The enormous central trading hall, still the buildings most impressive feature, was opulently designed and is surmounted by a vast dome and not a sliver of wood was used during the construction. By the early 1900’s the building would become even grander. The National City Bank (NCB) (today’s Citibank) became the next tenant making this grand building its new corporate office. NCB commissioned famed architect Charles F. McKim to design a four-story addition atop 55 Wall. Mr. McKim set out to make the building more impressive than it already was by placing a row of dignified Corinthian columns above the Isaiah Roger’s colonnade for an even more impressive Wall Street facade. Even though the renovation doubled the available space, the bank retained its graceful elegance with its marble walls and floors and its set of Corinthian columns. Everyone who comes downtown feels it. Walking the narrow, curving streets, or glimpsing the collision of an ancient brick front with a sixty-story office building, or turning a corner to come suddenly upon a slice of sky and water, one quickly senses that this place is like no other in America -- or for that matter the world.
